Look Out for Your Ballot to Vote on Our By-Laws Revisions

May 7, 2021

Takeaway: If you’re a member of the union, please look for an email from Election Runner this morning and vote on the ratification of our revised by-laws.

Dear colleague,

We are writing to you at the end of a challenging academic year, during which so many of you have stepped up to care for our students and community through your extraordinary commitment to teaching remotely, your ongoing research in the most difficult circumstances, and your work to support our entire community.

As a union, we are governed by our by-laws, which we must periodically review and revise to reflect the work we are doing, our commitment to democratic structures, our broader values, and changing laws and regulations.

Our Executive Council has approved a revision of our by-laws, and this change must be ratified by our membership. You will shortly receive a ballot from Election Runner (at the same email address as you received this email). Please take a minute to vote on ratification.

The new by-laws are available in full by clicking here, and you can compare them with our current by-laws, which are posted here. We’ve also shared a brief document explaining the goals of this revision and the key changes proposed. In brief, this revision includes some needed updates and supports our work as an organizing, democratic union by incorporating new vice presidents for our various constituencies (EOF counselors, postdoctoral associates, grad workers, non-tenure track faculty, and tenure track faculty) and codifying the work of our department representatives and our organizing and action team to support negotiations and other critical union campaigns. The new by-laws will allow us to continue to build for the Rutgers our whole community deserves.

Please look for the email from Election Runner and take a minute to vote. The vote will run through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12.

In solidarity,
Todd and Becky

Todd Wolfson, President, Rutgers AAUP-AFT
Rebecca Givan, Vice President, Rutgers AAUP-AFT
