Dear colleague,

Our unions’ Joint Academic Freedom Committee invites you to a panel discussion on academic freedom and free speech, featuring speakers from campuses in New Jersey, Texas, and New York that are seeing the crackdown on basic democratic rights firsthand. The discussion on “Fighting for Our Right to Teach and Learn” will take place in person on Friday, November 7, at 12 p.m. in Murray Hall 301 on the College Avenue campus. Click here to RSVP.

The confirmed speakers are:

  • Tom Alter – Associate Professor, History, Texas State University professor, fired for speaking at a conference on socialism
  • Brittney Cooper – Professor, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Rutgers University
  • Tatiana Cozzarelli – Speaking on behalf of the Reinstate the CUNY Fired Four campaign
  • Kate Ecke – Adjunct Professor, Sociology, Rider University, fired for a social media post about Charlie Kirk
  • Max Weiss – Professor, History, Princeton University, disciplined for speaking about Palestine
  • Moderator: Maya Mikdashi – Assistant Professor, Rutgers University

The discussion will take up the threats to academic freedom, inside and outside the classroom, and discuss what our unions can do to protect the rights of everyone—students, staff, faculty, grad workers, and the community. Light refreshments will be served; feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.

We encourage you to print and share this flyer with your colleagues and students.

In solidarity,
Hank Kalet, Co-chair, Academic Freedom Committee, Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union
Sean Mitchell, Co-chair, Academic Freedom Committee, Rutgers AAUP-AFT
Whit Strub, Co-chair, Academic Freedom Committee, Rutgers AAUP-AFT
