Everything You Wanted to Know About…Parking at Rutgers!

June 16, 2023

Dear colleague,

We won several improvements around parking registration at Rutgers in our recently ratified contract. The changes go into effect on July 1, so we want to explain some new options that you may want to act on before then.

  • You can now choose to pay the annual registration fee for parking in a deduction from each biweekly paycheck, rather than all at once in January. As before, the deduction will be before taxes. Anyone hired after July 1 can pay a prorated fee to cover the days remaining in the fiscal year. Graduate workers with an academic year appointment will also pay a prorated fee for the days in the academic year.
  • The annual fee will now be based on a percentage of your salary in the last pay period of the previous fiscal year. Your raise due on July 1 (or September 1, in the case of grad workers with an academic year appointment) will not be included. See the chart below for the sliding scale of percentages.
  • To encourage carpooling, you can share the cost of a single parking registration among two or more vehicles, provided only one of them is parked on campus per day.
  • If you don’t purchase an annual pass, you can purchase up to 10 daily parking passes for personal use each year.

We anticipate that these options will soon be clear on the Rutgers website linked above.

The Annual Parking Fee Is Based on a Percentage of Salary*

Note: Annual parking fees for biomedical faculty in AAUP-BHSNJ are a flat 0.5% of annual salary, up to a cap of $600.

* Fees will be prorated for those with a start date after July 1 and graduate workers with an academic appointment.

In solidarity,
Becky and Todd
