Welcome Back! – Join Us for a Union BBQ: Friday, Sept 6, 3–7pm, Johnson Park

Dear colleague,

Welcome back on the first day of classes! We hope you were able to take time to relax over the summer.

We have a lot to discuss and plan as a union as the semester begins. But for now, we want to wish you a good first day back—and invite you to our unions’ Welcome Back BBQ in Johnson Park in Piscataway on Friday, September 6, from 3–7 p.m. Click here to tell us you’re coming.

Bring the whole family (and your furry friends!)—we’ll have food, crafts, and games for all ages. We’ve reserved Picnic Grove 1 of Johnson Park along the Raritan River (see the map below—there’s parking near the grove). We’ll provide drinks, burgers, and dogs, along with veggie, halal, and kosher options. You’re invited to bring a small side to share: salads, chips and dip, dessert, or your favorite beverages. But if you’re unable to, just bring yourself!

We need to know how many people to buy food for, so please click here to tell us you’ll be there. Then spread the word with your colleagues—you can plan to come as a group! We’ll have information at the BBQ about how you can get more involved in your union (and why you should join if you’re not yet a member!)—but mostly we just want to have the opportunity to say hello to each other after the summer break and talk informally about what we want to accomplish this semester.

If you’re in Newark or Camden, you’re welcome to join us in Piscataway, but we have social events planned there, too! In the meantime, please save the date for the first chapter meetings of the year: in Newark, Monday, September 30, at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom (click here to RSVP for the link); and in Camden, Wednesday, October 9, during the free period (11:20 a.m.–12:20 p.m.) in person, location TBA.

We don’t have to tell any of you that the elections in November will have enormous consequences for our university and our country. One thing we can do as educators is make sure our students and colleagues have the information they need to participate. The AAUP-AFT Legislative Committee has compiled a list of online resources and upcoming deadlines.

We urge you to share the URL (https://rutgersaaup.org/important-info-about-voting-in-november/) with your students. Click here to download a slide (in pdf, ppt, or jpg format) to project when students are arriving for class; the QR code will guide them to the voting information.

In solidarity,
