Dear colleague,
One year ago this month, our unions began a historic strike—the first academic strike in Rutgers’ 257-year history. It was the culmination of a contract campaign that ultimately won important gains for everyone we represent, especially the lowest-paid and most vulnerable educators and researchers at our university.
- In New Brunswick, we’re celebrating our first Strike-iversary on Wednesday, April 17, with music, entertainment, and a speakout on Voorhees Mall, behind Scott Hall on the College Avenue campus, starting at 1:30 p.m. Afterward, come to a union open house with food and drinks at Bell House, 11 Stone Street, from 3–6 p.m. Talk to colleagues in your department and plan to come together! Spring is here, and many of us haven’t been together in person since we walked the picket lines.
- In Camden, our unions and the community are showing up to support our students after the administration canceled Rutgers Day! Join us at the “Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity” on Thursday, April 18, at 12:45 p.m. at the Rutgers-Camden Campus Center.
- In Newark, we have celebrations in the works—stay tuned for more info!
We have a lot to celebrate this spring—but we also have battles ahead of us, on campus and nationally. Academic freedom is under attack around the country—and, very directly, on our own campuses. Our union is taking a lead in defending our rights. Meanwhile, the administration has tried to undermine our contract gains with demands for our departments to cut classes, increase class sizes, and more. We all feel the impact—our students, staff, grad workers and postdocs, adjunct and full-time faculty. Our Strike-iversary events will have speakers addressing these issues and more.
Our events coincide with the National Day of Action for Higher Education called by Higher Ed Labor United for April 17. Mobilizations will take place on campuses around the country, culminating at 5 p.m. with a “National Teach-In on the Future We Stand For.” Click here to register for the teach-in.
