We Have a Tentative Agreement. Here’s What Happens Next.

April 30, 2023

Dear colleague,

This evening, the Rutgers AAUP-AFT Executive Council, the Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union, and the AAUP-BHSNJ Council voted to approve and recommend ratification of Tentative Agreements (TA) for contracts covering 9,000 educators, researchers, and clinicians in our three unions.

Tomorrow, when the TAs are finalized and signed off by both our unions and the university, we will share the complete text with you. Each union will hold town hall events in the coming days—at least one will be a Zoom webinar to present the key components of the agreement and then others to have an interactive discussion. Starting later this week, union members will be asked to vote on ratifying the agreements as our contracts. The vote is tentatively scheduled to close at 12 p.m. on Monday.

In the meantime, you can start with these resources about the Tentative Agreements. The highlights document is not as comprehensive as the summaries put together by the bargaining teams:

  • Highlights of the Tentative Agreements for All Three Unions
  • Summaries of Articles in the Full-Time Faculty (including BHSNJ faculty) and Grad Worker TA
  • Summaries of Articles in the Adjunct Faculty TA
  • Summaries of Articles in the Postdoc TA
  • Summaries of Articles in the EOF TA
  • Summaries of Articles in the Winter-Summer Instructors TA

We are a democratic union, and our members will have the final say on whether these TAs are ratified. We’re proud of what we achieved by going on strike and joining together for the Rutgers we and our students deserve. We believe these are strong contracts that make numerous advances for our members. We didn’t win everything we asked for and deserve, but no labor contract ever does. We will continue fighting for a better Rutgers starting the day after we have a ratified contract.

In solidarity,
Rutgers AAUP-AFT, Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union, and AAUP-BHSNJ
