Dear colleague,
Many of you will already know this, but we want to update all of you on the situation with the student-led encampment on College Avenue.
Early this morning, New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway canceled finals taking place on the College Avenue campus through 12 noon. The student organizers of the encampment fear that arrests could take place later today, with a 3 p.m. deadline for clearing the encampment.
As we wrote on Monday, our unions defend our students’ and our members’ right to free speech, free assembly, and free expression. Union members who signed up to be observers or defenders to protect students in the event of arrests and repression are organized and present on Voorhees Mall.
If you’d like to know more about those plans, click here to read Monday’s message. If you would like to volunteer to be a union observer or defender, click here and fill out this form. If you would like to call or email Rutgers officials to express your concerns about the apparent administration plans to clear the encampment, you’ll find a list of top administrators below.
We hope there are no attempts at repression today, but we wanted to update everyone about what we know. We’ll keep you posted about further developments.
In solidarity,
Rutgers AAUP-AFT and Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union
