Tuesday, April 8, 4–5pm, Newark – Rally to Stop the Cuts and Defend Our Communities!

Dear {{ FirstName | commonize | default: “colleague” }},

We need to see you on April 8! Our unions are working with New Jersey labor and social justice organizations to organize a rally on Tuesday, April 8, from 4–5 p.m., in Military Park (51 Park Place) in Newark. Click here to let us know you’ll be there!

The rally is part of a National Day of Action called by a broad coalition of unions, including the national AAUP and AFT. In Newark, we’re thrilled to have AFT President Randi Weingarten, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, and our own AAUP President Todd Wolfson as featured speakers. We’re mobilizing to show our opposition to the Trump administration’s devastating funding cuts for education at all levels, research, and health care. But we’ll also raise our voices in defense of our rights to speak and protest and in defense of immigrant and other communities—and in support of full state funding for education at all levels.

Please make plans now to join us! If you work in Newark, we’ll be meeting up at three locations on the Newark campus on Tuesday and marching over to Military Park together:

  • 3:45 p.m. – On the steps of Paul Robeson Campus Center
  • 3:50 p.m. – Outside the front doors of CLJ
  • 3:50 p.m. – Outside the front doors of RBS

If you teach earlier in the day, please invite your students to join us at the rally—and talk to your department colleagues about picking a common meetup point and marching to the rally together.

If you work in New Brunswick, we need you in Newark, too! If you want to take the train to Newark together with colleagues, meet at the New Brunswick station for the 3:03 p.m. NJ Transit train to Newark Penn Station—we’ll walk to Military Park together.

Also, both Newark and New Brunswick members are coming to an Art Build at the union office at 11 Stone Street in New Brunswick on Monday, April 7, from 10:30 a.m.–1 p.m. If you can make it, feel free to drop by at any time in that midday window—click here to let us know you’re coming.

We don’t have to tell you that the federal government’s assault on higher education, scientific research, and so much more is frightening. But a resistance is taking shape—and we want Rutgers and New Jersey to be heard!

In solidarity,
Rutgers AAUP-AFT, Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union, and AAUP-BHSNJ

Other Upcoming Events and Actions

  • Faculty Speak Week – March 31–April 4
For one week, in classrooms and online courses, union members will take a few minutes of class time (or share info on Canvas for online classes) to call attention to how the federal attacks on higher education will shape students’ learning conditions and our ability to teach. Click here to tell us you’ll participate, and we will follow up with a folder of resources and training materials.
