Dear colleague,
We urge anyone who can to come out and support Governor Phil Murphy and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders when they visit Rutgers-New Brunswick this Thursday, October 28, at 6:30 p.m. (click here to register). We want to show that our unions at Rutgers back Governor Murphy as he campaigns for reelection—and make sure our side is mobilized to vote so that he wins by a wide margin.
The rally will be outside Bishop House on the College Avenue campus (click here for a Google map). We’ll be in an unheated open-air tent. A Rutgers ID or proof of vaccination will be required. Our Coalition of Rutgers Unions will participate in the event, and our union will announce our endorsement. Bernie Sanders will be coming from Washington to endorse Governor Murphy and promote an agenda that benefits working people and our unions.
Earlier this year, our union’s Executive Council voted to endorse Governor Murphy, not because he’s a Democrat but because of his record over the past four years:
- His first official act in office was signing the state Equal Pay Act, a law championed by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg that is the basis of our union’s lawsuit around pay equity.
- His administration fully restored threatened cuts to state funding of Rutgers for the 2020–21 fiscal year, so that our unions didn’t have to take the administration’s austerity for an answer.
- He fought to enact a millionaire’s tax that ensures essential state services, including higher education, by making the rich pay their fair share.
New Jersey is a much better place than it was under the anti-labor reign of Chris Christie. We want to keep it that way.
Don’t think this election is in the bag because Phil Murphy is a popular governor in a strongly Democratic state. We need to raise our voices and get out the vote! Come out this Thursday, October 28, at 6:30 p.m., at Bishop House on the College Avenue campus (click here to register). Please announce this rally before or after your classes before Thursday evening. Let’s show where our Rutgers unions stand.
In solidarity,
Becky and Todd
