Solidarity with the Hopewell, NJ, Starbucks Workers

Rutgers AAUP-AFT resolution of solidarity with and support for the Starbucks Workers United Organizing Committee of the Hopewell NJ Starbucks, Store 7853

WHEREAS, Workers at the Hopewell NJ Starbucks, Store 7853, have organized to form a union in an effort to establish true partnership and accountability in their workplace;

WHEREAS, Starbucks workers around the United States have taken inspiration from the workers at two Starbucks stores in Buffalo, NY, who have successfully unionized;

WHEREAS, Workers in all industries and states are inspired by the movement to unionize Starbucks that is currently sweeping the country;

WHEREAS, Starbucks has taken anti-union actions to discourage unionization through intimidation and threats to workers’ livelihoods; 

WHEREAS, Such anti-union activities are unacceptable in a democratic society;

WHEREAS, New Jersey is a proud union state with a strong tradition of working-class organization;

WHEREAS, The future of the working-class movement depends on building up strength in all sectors and workplaces;

THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, That, on behalf of the full-time faculty, graduate workers, postdocs, librarians, and EOF counselors of Rutgers University, Rutgers AAUP-AFT does hereby express its solidarity with the Starbucks Workers United Organizing Committee of the Hopewell NJ Starbucks, Store 7853; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That Rutgers AAUP-AFT calls on Starbucks to respect the will of its workers in the Hopewell NJ Starbucks, Store 7853, cease any and all anti-union activity at that location and at all Starbucks stores, and sign the Fair Election Principles as outlined by the Starbucks Workers Organizing Committee; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That Rutgers AAUP-AFT calls on all elected and appointed officials in the State of New Jersey to stand with the workers of this and any other Starbucks store who are taking steps to organize their workplaces; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That Rutgers AAUP-AFT will stand with the Starbucks workers of Hopewell should they need further support as they build their union and the larger movement.
