The nurses on strike at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital are asking supporters to write to their legislators in support of legislation that would establish safe staffing standards at hospitals such as RWJ. Below is a sample letter to legislators, but we encourage you to add personal stories and your own thoughts. You can click here to read more about the legislation, known as S-304—and you can click here to look up your legislators.
Dear [insert title and name]
Nurses at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital braved the COVID pandemic to save thousands of lives. These same nurses have now been out of work since early August as a result of their struggle to provide safe medical care to their patients. And now, these heroes are without health care themselves—RWJ has cut off their insurance.
I urge you to support S-304, a bill to establish safe nurse staffing standards for hospitals and ambulatory surgery facilities in New Jersey. The bill has languished before the NJ Senate since January. We owe it to our nurses, who have quite literally risked their lives for us, to support them now that they need us.
Sincerely,
