Our Union Has Endorsed Brian Varela for Congress in CD-7

The Rutgers AAUP-AFT faculty union’s executive council has endorsed Brian Varela in the Democratic primary for the New Jersey 7th Congressional district. The son of immigrants, Brian’s stances on voting rights, academic freedom, affordable health care and higher education, and reasserting Congressional authority on the use of American military force are positions that align with the priorities of the union and its members. In addition, of the candidates in the primary, Brian has taken the strongest stance opposing the unconstitutional excesses of ICE and DHS, including by joining the protests at Delaney Hall alongside Senator Kim, Mayor Baraka, and Reps. Mejia and McIver.

The 2026 election is immensely important to the union, our members, and our students. We look forward to fully supporting the general election candidate who will most effectively protect our rights. In the primary, the executive council believes Brian Varela to be that candidate. We encourage our members to engage in the primary election and vote next Tuesday.

In solidarity,
