Dear colleague,
After months of determined organizing work, our Adjunct Faculty Union colleagues have met their goal of getting a majority of PTLs—members and nonmembers—to sign electronic cards to unite our bargaining units! We’ll be asking President Holloway and the Rutgers administration to recognize us as #OneFaculty.
We want to share this message to PTLs from the Adjunct Faculty Union Executive Board:
Dear PTL colleague,
At the start of this past semester, our union launched a campaign to merge with the full-time faculty/grad worker union at Rutgers. Under NJ law, initiating this merger required us to get signatures from 50 percent plus 1 of our bargaining unit before the end of spring semester. Given the precarious nature of our employment, we knew that reaching this goal would be difficult.
But we did it! We are thrilled to announce that not only did we reach our goal—getting over 1,100 signatures—but we also grew our union by nearly 100 members. We are so proud of what we’ve accomplished together!
What happens now? First, we will deliver our merger cards to President Holloway, demanding he recognize our desire to bargain as One Faculty Union for our next contract. Details to come. Let us know if you would like to join us in delivering the cards, and send us a selfie to be included in the poster we’re creating for this event (instructions here).
Second, if you have not yet signed your merger card, there is still time to do so. Although we reached our goal, the more signed cards we deliver, the stronger we are. You can sign your merger card here.
Third, it’s time to move our campaign to the next stage. Over the coming months we will be coordinating closely with the full-time faculty/grad worker union to create joint proposals and strategies to win our demands at the bargaining table. Let us know if you would like to get more involved in our contract campaign. The single best way to win our contract demands is by having a large, engaged, and active membership.
On behalf of our Executive Board, congratulations to all of us who participated in this historic campaign. Check your emails for our schedule of summer union happy hours!
In solidarity,
The Executive Board of the PTLFC-AAUP-AFT
Congratulate your adjunct colleagues! Their merger card campaign took impressive organizing that should inspire all of our unions. Merger cards are still being accepted, so if you know an adjunct colleague who hasn’t signed yet, remind them to go to: https://rutgersaaup.org/merger. If you want to join us next week when we deliver the cards to the administration, email aaup@rutgersaaup.org, and we’ll get you the details. You can support our goal of working together for one contract by contributing a #OneFaculty selfie for the poster above—click here and follow the instructions.
In solidarity,
Becky and Todd
