Tell the Administration We’ll Defend Our Contract!

August 14, 2023

Takeaway: 1) Sign up to join an action TODAY (Monday, August 14) at 12 p.m. at Winants Hall (7 College Ave., New Brunswick) to protest the administration’s violations of our contract. 2) If you can’t make it to New Brunswick, protest on social media between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. today; see below for what to post.

Dear colleague,

We won strong contracts in the spring, but our unions will have to mobilize for a fight to make sure management respects and abides by them.

The administration’s violations of the contract have piled up throughout the summer: They have tried to push the cost of raises for grant-funded faculty, postdocs, and grad workers onto departments and schools, in breach of the requirement that these increases be centrally funded. They made it difficult for graduate workers to apply for funding extensions because of COVID delays, and then rejected a majority of those who applied. Many of our adjunct colleagues have been mislabeled as co-adjutants, limiting their access to union protections and benefits. And of course, they botched retro pay so badly that some of us are still trying to get what we’re owed.

This is unacceptable—and we want to make sure the administration knows it. Today (Monday, August 14) at 12 p.m., we will visit the offices of Chief Financial Officer J. Michael Gower and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Prahbas Moghe in Winants Hall (7 College Ave., New Brunswick) to demand that the administration abide by our contract, centrally fund raises, and grant COVID funding extensions. Fill out this form if you can join us today or at future actions.

If you’re unable to come to New Brunswick, you can still make your voice heard on social media. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., we’ll be posting on all our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram) about the administration’s violations of our contracts. When you post your own message or share one of ours, be sure to tag @RutgersU and use these hashtags: #HonorRContract, #PayUpRU, and #RutgersHasTheMoney.

In solidarity,
Todd, Becky, and Miguel
