General internship Description

The Mary Gibson Internship is a paid internship, intended to support undergraduates on any of the three campuses (Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick) who are interested in activism.

Interns will have the space and resources to address issues that impact their lives through student organizing and community-building.

Applications are now open and will be accepted until October 31, 2025. Click here to apply!

Is this internship right for you?

If you are passionate about social justice, creating change, or have ever just expressed frustration with how the university, corporations, or the government fail to meet your needs, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to make a difference. Whether you’ve shared your concerns with friends, professors, or through your own creative expressions, you’re already one step closer to becoming a student organizer.

No prior experience is required. Interns will be paired with a mentor who will guide them through the process of getting started, addressing their concerns, and determining the next steps in their organizing journey, ensuring a supportive and motivating experience.

Expectations

  • Interns are expected to attend monthly meetings and trainings, participate in weekly conference calls, provide updates on their organizing projects, and maintain regular communication with fellow interns, union leadership and staff.
  • Student interns will be expected to work at least 6 hours per week.
  • Students will be paired with a faculty mentor who will help guide students in selecting their activist projects and choosing resources to help them succeed.
  •  The fall 2025 semester will be dedicated to training on effective organizing strategies, learning about the history of student activism, and coming up with focused plans for student projects.
  • The spring 2026 semester will be dedicated to implementing student projects and reflecting on the internship work and experience.

Compensation

Students will receive a stipend of $1,800 per semester.

This position is funded and advised by Rutgers AAUP-AFT members and offers interns exposure to union organizing, current labor issues, and connections with organizers within the unions as well as in the broader community.
