Dear colleague,
Our raise for this year is showing up in our paychecks this week—but the Rutgers administration made an absolute mess of it. The problems are especially outrageous for our adjunct colleagues.
We spent yesterday demanding answers from University Human Resources and trying to figure out what’s going on. Late in the day, the head of UHR acknowledged the problems and promised a message would be sent out this morning; so far, it has not been sent. We will continue pressing UHR to fix these problems and communicating with you about their progress and any information you should know.
The calculation of retro pay for full-time faculty and EOF counselors should be simple—everyone will get a flat-dollar raise of $5,035 added to your base salary for this first year of the contract. Because that raise is retroactive to July 1 of last year, you should see an additional $4,552.72 (before taxes and deductions) in your check. That’s your retroactive raise back to July 1. In every remaining paycheck through June 30, your gross pay should be $192.91 higher than it was previously. Note: If you weren’t on the payroll as of June 30 of last year, you won’t receive the flat-dollar salary increase for this year, but you may benefit from a comparable increase to minimum salaries.
For some unexplained reason, management seems to be off by a small amount, one way or the other, for most of us. We will insist that the administration get the numbers right for everyone. But we want to concentrate on anyone whose checks are off by a lot. If your check is off by more than a couple of dollars from the amounts shown above, please fill out this form.
You may have other appointments and payments listed on your check. In particular, full-time faculty who taught Winter Session may have gotten retro pay to bring you up to 3 percent of your base salary (now increased by the $5,035 raise) per credit, or the new Winter-Summer minimum, whichever is higher. Deductions from our retro pay were also incorrect for many of us; this will also need to be corrected by UHR. If you fill out the form, please give us any other information you think will help us figure out what’s going on—so we can insist UHR fix this mess.
On July 1, your base salary (including the $5,035 raise for the current year) will increase again by 3.5 percent across the board. If you are a full-time faculty member, you can find out how your salary will be affected over the life of the new contract by using the Full-Time Faculty Raise Calculator.
We’re proud of the gains we made in this new contract, especially the significant pay increases and additional job security for our most vulnerable and lowest-paid colleagues. Thank you for everything you did during our strike and contract campaign to win a better Rutgers.
But with their retro pay mess, the administration is again showing why we will have to stay mobilized and ready to fight to defend our contract victories.
In solidarity,
Becky and Todd
