Takeaway: Please attend an important information session listed below.
Dear colleague,
We want to talk to you about filing for unemployment under work-sharing, but we first have to emphasize a critical “do” and “don’t”:
DON’T try to file for unemployment yet. We can begin filing on Sunday, April 18; trying to file sooner will cause errors and delays. We will have a full week after April 18 to apply (and potentially longer if you need it), so don’t worry about missing a deadline. You’ll receive detailed instructions from University Human Resources (UHR) about how and when to file.
DO talk to your department chair if you think you should be excluded from work-sharing for any of the reasons listed here. Management has asked department chairs to confirm information about faculty eligibility and report back. So if you think you should be exempt, contact your department chair right away to confirm that you aren’t on the list of participants. (We want to express our appreciation to chairs for doing this work on short notice; we know some of you have received confusing information about this role.)
Starting Sunday, April 18 (and NOT before!), those of us eligible for work-sharing will begin filing for unemployment. UHR is holding information sessions about how to apply today and Thursday, and the union will follow up with our own info sessions on Thursday and Friday and throughout next week. We encourage you to attend one of each.

Unfortunately, the UHR information session yesterday was inaccurate on several points that are specific to the work-sharing program for faculty. We explained the mistakes to management and hope that the next sessions will be more accurate. At our union info sessions, we will make sure you have clear instructions to follow, and we will do our best to answer all your concerns. You can start with our Who Is Eligible? reference sheet and our Work-Sharing and Furloughs FAQ. If you have questions that aren’t answered there, email us at aaup@rutgersaaup.org.
We’ll have more information for you each day the rest of the week and throughout next week, so please check your inbox for messages from us.
In solidarity,
Todd and Becky
