Faculty Grievance Procedures

Rutgers AAUP-AFT assists faculty members in finding informal solutions to problems they face in the workplace. The staff of the union routinely meets with faculty members to discuss and explore ways to resolve issues of many kinds. If a resolution is not achievable through informal efforts, faculty members are advised as to whether the issue(s) in question can be pursued through one of the two negotiated grievance procedures, and/or whether other avenues are available.

If you have questions and/or need information in general about university practices, policies or rules, you can get assistance by emailing us at aaup@rutgersaaup.org. We will attempt to answer any questions you may have.

Rutgers AAUP-AFT is only authorized to pursue grievances on behalf of its members under the collective bargaining agreement with Rutgers. It does not provide members with lawyers or legal advice for pursuing outside discrimination or other types of claims. Contact us at aaup@rutgersaaup.org to discuss your rights and obligations under the Collective Agreement.

The sections of our union’s contract relevant to faculty grievance procedures are Articles 9, 10, 11, and 13:

  • Article 9 provides a fair and effective procedure for identifying, articulating, and resolving problems and disputes based on the terms and conditions in our contract or allegations based on University policy that directly affect the work and welfare of faculty (unrelated to reappointment, promotion, or tenure decisions).
  • Article 10 covers grievances related to reappointment, promotion, and/or tenure decisions for Tenured and Tenure-Track faculty.
  • Article 11 covers grievances related to reappointment and promotion for Non-Tenure-Track faculty.
  • Article 13 contains procedures for an expedited appeal of denial of tenure.

Staff

The Rutgers AAUP-AFT Contract Enforcement/Grievance team has four staff members: BJ Walker, Damon Fillman, Jillian Bogle, and Wendy Asreen. Members of the AAUP-AFT Grievance and Working Conditions Committee are appointed by the president.

You may contact a staff representative in this department for assistance by emailing aaup@rutgersaaup.org. Meetings are by appointment only.
