Dear colleague,
Stand Up for Science in Trenton! We invite you to join Rutgers scientists at a rally on Friday, March 7, from 12–2 p.m. outside the New Jersey State House (145 State St.) in Trenton to protest the federal attacks on research and to build a movement to increase public and state investment in science and higher education.
Rutgers is facing a huge potential loss of federal funding, and unfortunately, the state budget proposed this week by Gov. Murphy would decrease funding for higher ed, not increase it. The legislature will be debating the next NJ budget inside the State House, so this is a good time to highlight how science and academia need to be supported! Click here to let us know you’re coming. Some New Brunswick colleagues are planning to travel together; we’ll take a train that leaves the New Brunswick station at 10:58 a.m.
Our members are helping organize the Trenton rally as part of a national Stand Up for Science mobilization on March 7. The Trenton action will bring together scientists and science advocates from higher ed institutions across the state. While the larger Stand Up For Science rally in Washington, DC, will focus on national issues, we also want to draw attention to how federal cuts to science funding will impact New Jersey, in terms of economics, education (from K-12 through graduate-level higher ed), and science and technology development.
If you want to Stand Up for Science on Friday, March 7, from 12–2 p.m. in Trenton (outside the NJ State House, 145 State St.), click here to let us know you’re coming! We need our state to support science and higher education—because everyone benefits from medical breakthroughs, clean air and water, public health initiatives, and more!
For background on the issues at stake for science, read this lead article in today’s Chronicle of Higher Education—a featured interview with our own Annika Barber, an assistant professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and one of the organizers of next week’s rally.
