Dear colleague,
We’ve been living through the pandemic for over a year, and we have faced unprecedented challenges. Even as we forged a groundbreaking agreement with Rutgers, our part-time faculty are still facing difficulties. Please take a moment to sign a petition circulated by our PTL colleagues calling for an end to the cutbacks that have devastated students, university employees, their families, and communities throughout New Jersey.
Some 20 percent of adjunct faculty—around 400 of our colleagues—were not rehired for their regular courses in the Fall and Spring semesters. Though management agreed during our fiscal emergency negotiations to rescind last spring’s hiring freeze that led to these layoffs, there is no guarantee that PTLs will get their courses back. Rutgers should restore these courses and return class sizes to Fall 2019 levels, and PTLs must get appointment letters in a timely manner so they can plan their work schedules.
To build on the progress we have made this spring, we want to make sure management hears our message that no one is disposable! Our work would not be possible without the essential work of our part-time lecturer colleagues. Please take time now to read the petition and sign it. Then spread the word to your colleagues, friends, and other members of the Rutgers community.
In solidarity,
Todd and Becky
