Dear colleague,
We are closer to an agreement in our negotiations with management that would involve furloughs under a work-sharing program in return for significant management concessions on our core demands: grad funding extensions, job security for staff, PTL reappointments, and a schedule for paying our deferred raises.
We don’t have a deal yet and won’t until management meets our demands. But we want to talk to you about what we’re negotiating. Please come to a Town Hall meeting TODAY (Thursday) at 5 p.m. to find out more (click here to RSVP).
If we reach an agreement, the work-sharing program will have the most impact on the most members. With some exceptions, our members would take a half-day furlough each week for 12 weeks through June 30. Under work-sharing, if you apply for unemployment, members making up to around $194,000 a year would protect their full income through a combination of state benefits and the $300-a-week federal unemployment supplement.
We have finished updating our FAQ about work-sharing. Please read it to see if it answers your questions and concerns, but also bring them to the town hall.
In return for accepting work-sharing, we are fighting for:
— Funding extensions for grad students: We want a program with clear and simple criteria for grads at the candidacy stage to apply for an extension.
— Job security for our staff colleagues: Staff unions want a no-layoff guarantee running through the start of next year.
— PTL reappointments: Our part-time faculty colleagues want the hiring freeze imposed last spring rescinded.
— A timetable for payment of our canceled raises: We are demanding that the raises canceled by management last summer must ultimately show up in our paychecks and not be taken away altogether.
— Rescind the fiscal emergency: We want management to not be able to declare another fiscal emergency for the life of our contract.
We don’t have an agreement yet, but we want to start talking over the important questions with you. Please come to the Town Hall meeting TODAY (Thursday) at 5 p.m. to find out more (click here to RSVP).
In solidarity,
Todd and Becky
