Inclusion of First-Semester PTLs

 

The newly ratified Collective Bargaining Agreement between the PTL union and the RU administration makes official the inclusion of all first-semester Part-Time Lecturers into the bargaining unit of employees we represent. Up to this point, all PTLs working in their first semester were excluded from union representation. PTLs had to wait one semester before being eligible to join the union and to have all the rights and guarantees that we have negotiated under the Agreement. This amounted to a sort of probationary period for employees teaching for the first time.

Now about 500 PTL faculty will enjoy the rights, benefits and protections of our union contract. Among the new benefits are retroactive salary increases and eligibility to apply for funding from the PTL Professional Development Fund:

Retroactve Salary Increase
A retroactive salary increase for Fall Semester 2015 raises this group of PTLs to the union-negotiated minimum salary:

  • For those paid by the credit hour, the Fall 2015 minimum is $1642.
  • For PALS Intensive and evening PTLs, the Fall 2015 minimum is $50/hour.
  • For PALS Corporate program, the Fall 2015 minimum is $55/hour.
  • For Mason Gross School of the Arts studio PALs, the Fall 2015 minimum is $370/student.

 

The PTL faculty union has been informed by RU administration that PTLs should see the retroactive salary increase on the last paycheck for the Fall 2015 semester, i.e. on Friday, January 29, 2016. Members and union leaders work together to monitor the implementation of the terms and conditions of the Agreement.

PTL Professional Development Fund Eligibility

The deadline to submit a proposal for professional development funds for the 2015-2016 academic year is February 1, 2016. This Fund has $60,000 to distribute each year under the new contract. A PTL's proposal (request for funding) must be endorsed by the Department Chair or Program Director and approved by the Dean before being submitted via email to Nancy Carvalho: Go to the PTL Professional Development Fund page for the details, incuding the format for requests.
