Victory Today - First Step toward Restoring and Expanding EOF Funding for 2016-17
Dear EOF Members:
Great News!!! We’ve won the first battle to restore and expand EOF funding in the coming year!
Back in February, Governor Christie proposed in his Budget Address to cut Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) state-wide by $2.565 million in the 2016-17 state budget, from $41.387 million down to $38.822 million. We fought hard over the past two years for that $2.565 million to strengthen and expand EOF with strong support from our legislative and community allies and of course our students and EOF alumni.
Today (June 23, 2016) the legislature introduced its version of the 2016-17 budget and it put $5 million more into EOF than the Governor did back in February. So the cut is restored with an expansion of nearly $2.5 million for a total amount of $43.822 million. This is incredible news and we thank all of you for your great work every day with our students and your extra work in advocating for the program.
The battle is not over yet. We expect the budget bills to come out of committee today in both the Senate and the General Assembly and to pass a final vote in each chamber next week. We will then have to urge the Governor to sign the budget as approved by the Legislature.
