As Part-Time Lecturer Faculty Chapter President Richard Gomes steps down, interim leadership will assume positions until the regularly-scheduled spring PTL elections take place.
January 12, 2015
Dear PTL Colleagues,
I write to announce that I must step down from the PTLFC-AAUP-AFT presidency. I have the good fortune of receiving a full-time non-tenure track position in my department, PALS – Newark. This position takes me out of the PTL bargaining unit and into the full-time unit where I will continue to advocate for all faculty at Rutgers as best I can. Advocating for PTLs at Rutgers and across the nation has been a passion of mine and I have no intention to give that up.
Coincidentally, just as I step down, our vice president Barry Batorsky is also leaving. Barry is no longer teaching at Rutgers. This double vacancy means that our Secretary, Teresa Politano, a long-time PTL in the Journalism Department of SCI, will move to the top officer slot, as Interim President. Our Executive Board will appoint an Interim Vice President from their members. New officers are due to be elected in the spring no matter what and I urge you to consider coming forward to run in the elections. With bargaining beginning soon, we need as much membership engagement and activism as possible.
I have been proud to represent and speak for PTLs at Rutgers for the past 8 years and wish you all the best for the future, especially in re-negotiating the Collective Agreement. Working together with the outstanding staff at the Rutgers AAUP office has produced advances in the past few years and I strongly believe that with your engagement, you will be able achieve significant gains for the working conditions of Rutgers PTLs.
