Postdocs gather to plan professional development programming

Submitted by Staff on Wed, 08/10/2016 - 14:06

Postdoctoral Associates and Fellows are invited to develop professional development programming for postdocs working at Rutgers in 2016-2017.

The Postdoctoral Association (PDA) will be having a working-lunch, planning session on Friday, August 12 at 12:30 pm. See more details below. The plans will include the annual fall symposium at the end of September and the spring monthly professional development programming. The 2016 Postdoctoral Symposium could reflect what you and your colleagues want and need, if you plan ahead now.

WHAT: "Postdocs: Fall 2016 and beyond"
WHEN: Friday, Aug. 12, 12:30 PM, lunch provided
WHERE: Dean's Conference Room, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Research Tower, 675 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08854
(Rutgers - Busch Campus)

Send your RSVP to Tina Cicolella (cicoletm@gsbs.rutgers.edu) by Thursday, August 11 so there will be enough sandwiches.

Is this confusing? PDA, Postdoc Union? What's the difference? I'll try to make it clear!

  • PDA - Professional development programming. As part of a merged institution of higher education, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School postdoctoral association (PDA) continues to be made up of postdocs on the Rutgers health sciences campus but has also expanded to include all Rutgers postdocs.
  • Postdoc Union - Professional empowerment. The Postdoc Union is empowered by law and member activism to deal with postdoc employment rights and benefits. Since the first union-negotiated contract was ratified by postdoc members in 2012, Rutgers postdocs have had a voice in their working conditions. We are exploring how we could expand to include postdoc positions that are not now structured as union-eligible positions; in what way could they gain access to this way of having a stronger voice for work-life well-being via economic and health care options?

The Postdoc Union and the PDA work collaboratively; we have different but complementary missions. The two together are a great combination, powered by postdocs for postdocs and connected to other faculty at Rutgers who care about their postdoc colleagues becoming empowered professionals.
