On February 26, 2016, President David M Hughes sent the following message to our members who are full-time faculty and teaching assistants-graduate assistants. The Executive Council and President Barchi both independently reaffirm commitment to academic freedom.

Dear Colleague,

Yesterday, the Executive Council (EC) of our Union met to consider attacks on Associate Professor Jasbir Puar (Women's and Gender Studies, SAS-NB) and related issues of academic freedom. Media have covered Dr. Puar's early February lecture at Vassar in some depth. For a range of perspectives, you may read the following three sources, listed from the most critical to the most supportive:

Yesterday President Barchi re-committed the Administration to academic freedom in general: http://president.rutgers.edu/public-remarks/speeches-and-writings/rutgers-president-free-speech-and-academic-freedom

Specifically on behalf of Dr. Puar - and to help shield colleagues who may find themselves in a related predicament, the EC has issued this statement: http://www.rutgersaaup.org/news/executive-council/defense-professor-jasbir-puars-academic-freedom

Have a wonderful weekend.

Cheers,

David M. Hughes
