Meeting with SAS Deans

Submitted by Staff on Mon, 09/18/2017 - 13:27

On September 18, 2017, the following notice of a meeting with SAS Deans was sent to full-time faculty about the proposed administrative reorganization of departments in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) in Rutgers-New Brunswick.

Dear Faculty Union Member:

Punchline: If you have not already done so, please sign the petition to request a meeting with the SAS deans regarding the proposed administrative reorganization of SAS departments. If you have already signed the petition, you may wish to email Executive Dean Peter March (sasexecdean@sas.rutgers.edu) requesting the same meeting.

Several concerned SAS faculty wrote to you back on August 28th to alert you to a reorganization of the administrative staff in the School of Arts and Sciences—changes that might undermine the working relationship between chairs, other faculty, and administrative assistants as well as impose greater workloads on our members. The “realignment” would interrupt the primary reporting relationship between staff and chairs. We directed you to a petition, asking for the Executive Dean Peter March to schedule an extraordinary SAS faculty meeting to discuss those changes, as is required under SAS bylaws. In three days, that petition gathered 123 signatures, as compared with the 74 needed to obligate the dean to schedule that meeting. We sent Dean March the link to the signatures on August 31st, and he agreed with alacrity to schedule the meeting. However, even as the signatories have grown to 189, he has not done so.

So we are writing to you again as the situation becomes more urgent. The Dean’s Office appears to be preparing to implement the new structure forthwith, without any input from faculty.  SAS is in the process of hiring several new administrators  who would supervise departmental staff through a primary reporting line. If you have not already done so, please sign the petition to request a meeting with the SAS deans regarding the proposed administrative reorganization of SAS departments. If you have signed the petition, you may wish to email Executive Dean Peter March (sasexecdean@sas.rutgers.edu) requesting the same meeting.

In solidarity,
David Hughes, Professor of Anthropology
VP, Rutgers AAUP-AFT, the faculty union
