May 1: Wear Red and Join Your Campus May Day Rally, 12 noon-1pm

Submitted by Staff on Tue, 04/18/2017 - 16:43

Dear Rutgers AAUP-AFT Union Members,

This May Day, Monday, May 1, hundreds of thousands of people in the US will participate in rallies, marches and other actions in defense of immigrants and labor rights, and to continue the resistance to the Trump agenda. Here at Rutgers, our union is joining with staff unions, student organizations and community groups to show solidarity with each other and the communities we serve.

On all three main campuses, we will hold rallies from 12 noon to 1pm Monday, May 1, and we are asking everyone to wear red that day and participate in the rallies, if they can. In addition, we’ll be distributing new stickers for all to wear and post.

As a holiday that began in the US as a fight for the 8-hour workday, May Day presents an opportunity for all 20,000 unionized Rutgers employees to assert our unity.

Those who can, are encouraged to join us later that afternoon at the Newark rally and march to the Federal Building in downtown Newark.

Campus rally information:

Camden: 12-1pm, rally and speakout at the Walt Whitman statue in front of the Campus Center.

Newark: 12-1pm, rally and speakout in front of the Robeson Student Center.

New Brunswick: 12-1pm, rally and speakout at Voorhees Mall off College Ave.

For those in New Brunswick who would like to participate in the citywide Newark rally at Lincoln Park at 2pm and march to the Federal Building starting at 3pm, RSVP to aaup@rutgersaaup.org for a seat on a free round-trip coach to Newark and back.

Let's stand together and fight for better working conditions for all Rutgers employees, and send a strong message to the Trump administration that—along with our AFT colleagues nationally—we continue to support the rights of immigrants and other vulnerable groups in the United States.

In solidarity,
David and Deepa

David M. Hughes, President
Professor of Anthropology (SAS-New Brunswick)

Deepa Kumar, Vice-President
Associate Professor of Journalism and Media Studies (SC&I-New Brunswick)
