The Incident of Kevin Allred

Submitted by Staff on Tue, 11/22/2016 - 15:55

On November 22, 2016, President Teresa Politano and Secretary David Chapman sent a message to Rutgers PTLs about the incident of Kevin Allred.

Dear PTL faculty,

The Part-Time Lecturer Faculty Chapter, AAUP-AFT, vigorously defends the academic freedom and freedom of speech of all faculty.

Many of you have contacted your Union seeking information regarding Mr. Kevin Allred, a part-time lecturer teaching in New Brunswick. Last week, press reports circulated widely regarding Mr. Allred’s tweet and subsequent contact with the police and visit to Bellevue Hospital. It has now been reported that Mr. Allred has been placed on administrative leave by the Rutgers administration.

The Union has been and remains in contact with Mr. Allred; we are currently conferring with our Counsel and with Mr. Allred to determine any further course of action. Because the Union vigorously defends the academic freedom and freedom of speech of all faculty, we are therefore continuing to gather all available facts related to this incident. We also stand in defense of Mr. Allred's rights to privacy and due process.

In solidarity,

Teresa Politano
