Dr Lisa Klein volunteers to be point person with Principal Investigators on postdoc Issues

Submitted by Staff on Tue, 01/26/2016 - 15:57

On January 26, 2016, President David M Hughes announced that Dr. Lisa Klein has volunteered to be point person with Principal Investigators on postdoc issues.

Dear colleagues,

At Rutgers, we are putting together support services for our postdoctoral colleagues, as are appropriate for a research university of our size. We have heard from numerous postdocs and Principal Investigators that Rutgers is a confusing maze when it comes to simple questions about non-immigrant visa issues, integration of RBHS postdocs into our Postdoc Union, health insurance, grant-writing, career development opportunities, etc.

We are looking for ways to facilitate this process and welcome your input and suggestions. Dr. Lisa Klein has volunteered to be the faculty point person on postdoc issues for Principal Investigators. She served as president of the union immediately before my term. Whenever you have comments or concerns, please give Lisa a call or email:

We think there is considerable reason for hope that we can make positive changes due to these three circumstances:

  • Granting agencies currently require Principal Investigators to describe career development plans when hiring postdocs. By working with PIs to create a Postdoc infrastructure for Rutgers as a whole, we will make this part of grant-writing easier.
  • Postdocs themselves have standing to negotiate and conduct labor-management meetings with RU management through the Postdoc Union, Rutgers AAUP-AFT.
  • Through the union and other venues (e.g., National Postdoctoral Association and local Postdoctoral Association at Rutgers), we have allies and colleagues who are also working to enhance the quality of the postdoctoral experience.

We look forward to meaningful conversations to improve the postdoctoral experience at Rutgers.

Best wishes,

David M. Hughes
