Deadline for PTL Professional Development Fund applications: Feb 1, 2016

The newly-member-ratified Part-Time Lecturer (PTL) Collective Negotiations Agreement contains a $60,000 professional developmend fund, which PTLs teaching at Rutgers can draw upon for reimbursement of expenses related to their professional development activities that support the employee's ability to continue to provide excellence in teaching and learning. 

The deadline to apply is Monday, February 1, 2016. Funding requests may be for activities in Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Summer 2015 or Summer 2016. Funds will be dispersed only to employees who are Part-Lecturers holding an appointment in the PTL bargaining unit for the semester in which they have expended or will expend the funds, i.e. the PTLs must be employed teaching at Rutgers during the semester in which the professional development activity was done. 

The procedure for applying is to write a proposal with the following details:

Part-Time Lecturer's Full Name
Department/ decanal unit/ campus
Amount of funding requested along with a detailed budget outlining the use of the funds
Semester during which funds will be expended
Project statement, including how the project relates to professional activities at Rutgers (limited to one page)
Endorsement by the Department Chair or Program Director
Approval by the Dean

The request for funding should be in the form of an email to Nancy Carvalho at ncarvalho@oldqueens.rutgers.edu. Applications for funding will be reviewed for merit and relevance by a committee established for this purpose.

Requests for funding should be submitted no later than February 1, 2016. Funding decisions will be announced by March 11, 2016. PTLs should maintain receipts for funds that have been expended because the funds will only be released when the appropriate receipts have been submitted for reimbursement. Note that reimbursement for travel expenditures may be provided only for the improvement of teaching and learning.

Lee, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, to Chancellors, Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs, which informed them that the University administration is ready to accept applications for use of this Fund as of December 10, 2015 and that all bargaining unit PTLs in their school or department should be informed of the existence of the Fund and the format that should be followed in requesting allocations from the Fund.

The PTL Professional Development Fund is a union-negotiated benefit. It exists because active, full members of the PTL Faculty Chapter have advocated for it each time the union has negotiated a contract. They have indicated a need for this type of support in order to be able to continue their professional development. Excellence in teaching and learning is delivered to undergraduate students day-in and day-out by Part-Time Lecturers, who teach approximately 30% of courses at Rutgers.
