Loads of new members signed up during TA Orientation Week! Thanks to the member TA-GA activists who helped out, building our union stronger.
The Graduate Education Committee met on July 28th to continue discussions about resolving issues with the Professional Development Fund. Graduate students were represented by Rutgers AAUP-AFT members from Geography, Computer Science, Women & Gender Studies, and Ecology & Evolution as well as the local chapter President, David M. Hughes.
- We continued to push for equal distribution of PD funds based on the survey results. Although the administration was unrelenting on the issue at the meeting, we believe that they have displayed a willingness to reconsider before the next GEC meeting.
- Another point of conflict at the meeting was our demand that the PDF committee review students that applications ranked under a 5. David Hughes insisted that, by not reviewing the vast majority of the applications, the administration was breaching the contract. If the administration accepts the demand to expand the applications reviewed, it would begin to restore faith in the process among the Graduate Program Directors as well as the graduate students.
Moving forward we know that the best chance we have to win these demands will come from building the power of the graduate student unit.
We will be holding regular TA-GA activist meetings -- with food! Stay in touch via the union office or speaking with union organizers or your fellow union member-activists to find out about meetings and upcoming events!
