As faculty at Rutgers, we care deeply about the social conditions our students, staff, colleagues and many of us face every day, including economic inequality, racial injustice, and the brutality practiced by some police officers.
Our union has always stood against oppression and exploitation and in solidarity with those fighting back and I’m asking you to take action again.
On Saturday, July 25th at 12 noon, there will be a mass rally and march in Newark initiated by our community allies, People’s Organization for Progress, who stood by us most recently in our contract battle. Dozens of local organizations and unions, including the health care workers of SEIU 1199 and our staff colleagues in URA-AFT, have endorsed the march and I want our faculty to join them at the Million Peoples March Against Police Brutality, Racial Injustice and Economic Inequality. Marchers will be gathering Saturday, July 25th at 12 noon at the Lincoln Monument at Springfield Avenue and West Market Street in Newark, New Jersey--and our union will be there as well.
To find out more about the march, please go to their website, http://www.popmillionpeoplesmarchagainstpolicebrutality.com/ We plan to have our union banner there and organizers will bring extra union shirts for those who RSVP to email@example.com.
Thanks for standing up for social justice,
David M. Hughes, President, Rutgers AAUP-AFT
