Action: Petition to support #SanctuaryCampus and Nov 16 actions

Submitted by Staff on Tue, 11/15/2016 - 15:44

President David M Hughes and Vice-President Deepa Kumar sent out the following message to full union members in the full-time faculty unit--and the same was also sent by President Teresa Politano of the Part-Time Lecturer Faculty Chapter:

Dear Union Members:

In light of Donald Trump's declaration that he will begin immediately to deport 2-3 million immigrants, we need to act. You can take three actions:

1. Sign the petition that Professors Carlos Decena and Yolanda Martinez-San Miguel have launched to support a sanctuary campus for all threatened students, faculty, and staff--particularly those benefiting from DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

2. All three Rutgers campuses are rallying on Wed, Nov 16 at 3pm:

New Brunswick-area: Voorhees Mall (College Ave campus).
Newark: Paul Robeson Campus Center
Camden: Gather around the Walt Whitman statute outside the Camden Campus Center

More than a hundred universities will be participating in the walkout tomorrow!

3. Make sanctuary signs. We are in the process of making sanctuary posters and stickers but, in the meantime, we encourage you to make your own and post in your departments, on your office doors and windows, labs, and other spaces.

In solidarity,

David M Hughes
