AAUP-AFT members were excited, when last week we held the two actions organized by the union. On Thursday, dozens of our colleagues forced management’s bargaining team to walk through a gauntlet of faculty, from assistant professors to distinguished professors, to get to the negotiating table. Chants of “Education first, recreation second!” and pointed questions about management’s fiscal priorities were directed at them.
On Friday, members attended a rally of more than 100 workers in coordination with other campus unions to demand that Barchi and his team work with ALL of the campus unions to secure raises as well as dignity and respect for Rutgers’ employees. Check out our Facebook page for the pictures and video clips of the event, www.facebook.com/RutgersAAUPAFT.
After the picket, faculty and students brought signs to President Barchi’s State of the University address where the Q&A section was dominated by labor concerns.
One of the most memorable parts of Barchi’s address to the Senate was when he said that he wanted to have a quick resolution to bargaining a contract with us. He also wrongly said that our union had refused five separate bargaining dates over the summer. This is simply not true. We have not refused any dates. In fact, Barchi’s team rejected our proposal to meet weekly for at least six hours at a time in order to reach a settlement. Has the management negotiating team not kept Barchi up-to-speed, was he simply lying, or is he ignorant about the various unions at the University he presides over?
Since President Barchi said he wants to resolve our dispute quickly, members are taking action to press him to make it happen. Anyone reading this news item, take a minute to write an email to President Barchi, urging him and his team to stop stalling and set more than one bargaining session every few weeks with us (our next session is not till Oct 16th). Our bargaining team, despite their teaching, research and service duties, is ready to meet at almost any time to represent your interests.
