Dear President Barchi:
This is an important time for Rutgers. The university has entered the Big Ten Athletic Conference. And the school is celebrating its 250th anniversary. As we celebrate and honor these achievements, we are asking you to also respect and honor those who make Rutgers the first-rate university our state needs and deserves.
As such, we urge you to negotiate in good faith with the 20,000 hard-working men and women the university is currently in contract negotiations with. These New Jersey residents - including professors, faculty, healthcare professionals and staff – are the ones who work to make this school great. Rutgers works because they do.
Specifically, we are imploring you to:
- Respect faculty and staff by bargaining in good faith for fair contracts immediately;
- Tackle student debt by making tuition more affordable;
- Focus on fundamentals and stay true to Rutgers core mission as an outstanding institution of higher learning, research and healthcare.
We, the undersigned Rutgers alumni, students, elected leaders and New Jersey residents, strongly support the 20,000 hard-working men and women you are currently in negotiations with. We sincerely hope you will deal with Rutgers faculty and staff in good faith, so they receive the contracts and benefits they deserve and have earned.
