Lisa Klein, President of Rutgers AAUP-AFT, calls on faculty to pass departmental resolutions to express their solidarity with our staff colleagues who've stood with us in our fight for a fair contract. Most Rutgers staff remain without contracts, and management continues to resist extending the same protections to them that we won in our own tentative agreement a few weeks ago.
Rutgers AAUP-AFT Executive Council passed this statement calling for management to extend to our staff colleagues the exact same language in the "subject to" clause and on healthcare that our faculty union procured in our 2014–2018 agreement.
Whether by email vote or in your department's next in-person meeting, Dr. Lisa Klein asks that you consider passing this statement as well.
The statement is as follows:
Statement in Solidarity with Rutgers Staff Unions
We express our solidarity with all the staff unions of Rutgers University, including our EOF Counselor unit, as they continue to bargain for fair contracts.
We call on Rutgers' management to extend to our staff colleagues the exact same language in the "subject to" clause and on healthcare that our faculty union, Rutgers AAUP-AFT, has procured in our 2014–2018 agreement.
In light of our common past experience of frozen wages, these changes are crucial for providing staff union members a fiscal emergency trigger; transparency with respect to the requirement that the University provide detailed reasons for determining there is a fiscal emergency and the documents supporting that determination; and an expedited arbitration process. It is essential to faculty that our staff colleagues receive the same protections in their contracts as we have in ours.
Further, we call upon the University to agree to fair wages, raises, and job security terms that our staff colleagues require to continue to provide their excellent services. Rutgers AAUP-AFT's collaboration with our staff unions remains steady and we stand ready to take whatever actions are needed to resolve fair contracts for our EOF members and all other staff union colleagues as well as PTLs and Post-Docs.
Rutgers works because we all do.
